{"id":501,"date":"2014-01-08T23:59:30","date_gmt":"2014-01-08T23:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/live-meadowsorthodonticsdotcom.pantheonsite.io\/?p=501"},"modified":"2014-01-08T23:59:30","modified_gmt":"2014-01-08T23:59:30","slug":"many-eight-year-olds-braces-days","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.meadowsorthodontics.com\/blog\/?p=501","title":{"rendered":"Why are so many eight-year-olds in braces these days?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h1 align=\"center\"><b><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN<\/span><\/b><\/h1>\n<p>One of the most commonly asked questions about orthodontics in the Castle Rock community is\u2026<\/p>\n<address><b><i>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhy do I see so many eight-year-olds in braces these days?<\/i><\/b><\/address>\n<p>An <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">excellent article<\/span> published by the Wall Street Journal discusses the pros and cons. To summarize the article, early or \u201ctwo phase\u201d treatment is orthodontic treatment before all the permanent teeth have erupted.\u00a0 This approach is used when waiting to treat would create a significantly more difficult treatment plan or less stable outcome.\u00a0 The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that all children be evaluated at the age of 7.\u00a0 <b><i>With that being said, only a relatively small percentage of those children will need early treatment.\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>Orthodontists generally agree that the optimum time to treat a case is during the adolescent growth spurt.\u00a0 In girls this is typically seen from ages 9 to 12, and in boys from ages 10-14.\u00a0 There are exceptions due to individual variation in growth.<\/p>\n<p>Lysle Johnston, one of the most prominent orthodontic educators of our day, has argued that a lot of early treatment is a \u201cpractice management decision\u201d rather than a biologic imperative<b><i>.\u00a0 <\/i><\/b>It is his way of kindly stating that much of it is done unnecessarily.<\/p>\n<p><b>The fundamental questions Dr. Rejman asks when evaluating a patient for early treatment are as follows:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u00a0If I don\u2019t treat this patient now, will I miss a window of opportunity that will negatively affect his\/her outcome?<\/li>\n<li>If I do 2 phases on this patient, will I achieve a better and\/or more stable outcome than treating with one phase?<\/li>\n<li>Will the patient look\/function any differently at 18 if I treat in 1 phase versus 2 phases?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If the answer to any of the above is \u201cyes,\u201d then early treatment <b><i><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">may<\/span><\/i><\/b> be indicated.\u00a0 Typical orthodontic problems treated early include cross bites or narrow palates, open bites, and under bites.\u00a0 Early treatment usually requires a second phase of orthodontic treatment when all the permanent teeth have erupted.\u00a0 When possible, Dr. Rejman prefers to treat patients in a single phase of treatment.\u00a0 Advantages of single phase treatment include less time in appliances (braces), less patient \u201cburn out\u201d and significantly less cost for families.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rejman offers a complimentary exam to assess your child\u2019s orthodontic needs.\u00a0 If treatment is indicated, we\u2019ll discuss why and what specifically is needed.\u00a0 If orthodontic problems are evident but no early treatment is indicated, we will continue to periodically monitor your child\u2019s teeth and jaw development at no fee until the time is appropriate for treatment.<\/p>\n<p><b><i>Dr. Rejman is the owner of Meadows Orthodontics, a private practice in Castle Rock, Colorado.\u00a0\u00a0Dr. Rejman is\u00a0conservative about early or \u201ctwo phase\u201d treatment.\u00a0 He is also one of the few Board Certified orthodontists in Douglas County and has treated over 4000 patients.\u00a0 He has been voted a TOP ORTHODONTIST by 5280 magazine in both 2012 and 2013.<\/i><\/b><b><i>\u00a0 <\/i><\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ORTHODONTIC TREATMENT FOR CHILDREN One of the most commonly asked questions about orthodontics in the Castle Rock community is\u2026 \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhy do I see so many eight-year-olds in braces these days?
